Healthy Food Review Rice Expressions Whole Grain Brown Rice Pilaf

Rice Expressions Whole Grain Brown Rice Pilaf is now a major component in one of my new favorite healthy, fast and lazy dinners!

I discovered Rice Expressions on a recent shopping trip to my local Whole Foods Market when I had some time and just wandered the freezer aisles checking for new products to try.  I've been super busy lately writing my newest book, so any quick and healthy meal I can make is a huge help.

I love rice pilaf, but it is not often offered in its healthiest form for very quick preparation.  And I love brown rice, but while the various brands of 10-minute boil in bag brown rice are quick, they usually aren't pre-seasoned, so then you are left with wondering how to give the brown rice some flavor other than using a quick standby like dumping marinara sauce on it.

Rice Expressions saves the day!  It offers not just organic brown rice, but organic brown rice pilaf that already is pre-packaged with delicious seasoning and peas and carrots.  Since Rice Expressions is frozen, you don't have to add any water or do anything to prepare other than making a slit in the package to vent it.  Best of all, this terrific dish organic brown rice pilaf dish can be served up in just 3 minutes!

To make it a complete meal for me, I'll simultaneously cook some Morningstar Farms Chik'n Starter Strips in a pan with some olive oil spray (which also takes about 3 minutes to gently brown.  Then as soon as the microwave buzzer sounds, I zip open the Rice Expressions package, tip out the pan's "chicken" contents, sprinkle some reduced fat parmesan cheese on top, and viola--a 3 minute healthy dinner!

Each Rice Expressions bag (2 in a package), is two servings.  So depending upon how hungry you are, you can use half a package, or a full one like I tend to do for dinner since Rice Expressions Whole Grain Brown Rice Pilaf is just 165 calories a serving with 3 grams of fat, no saturated fat, no trans fat, no cholesterol, 3.5 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein. 

Two caveats are that I think Rice Expressions Whole Grain Brown Rice Pilaf could use more vegetables (which, in fairness, is true of many prepared dishes, although the amount of vegetables is better than most).  When I have more than 3 minutes, I'll add some more organic frozen mixed vegetables to the mix.  Plus, Rice Expressions could seem expensive to the budget-conscious.  However, when you compare it to trying to buy fattening fast food, it's worth the extra expense, as it gives new meaning to "fast food" in a positive, healthy way.

Rice Expressions makes a few varieties, but the organic brown rice pilaf one is my personal favorite.  It should be available to most of my loyal readers in a natural foods market in all but 5 states at this time.
