Healthy Eating Flexitarian Style Is A Way To Go Green

Hi All,

I've always thought about having a mostly meatless, flexitarian style of eating from a health perspective, but a health news story tonight on Yahoo made me think of healthy eating a whole new way.

Apparently, giving up, or at least substantially reducing your meat intake, is eco-friendly since according to a study from Germany, meat eaters' diets are responsible for nearly twice the emissions of those who eat vegetarian diets.  Don't you just love how when the media hops on a trend, it finds a way to use it in every news story possible?

Seriously though, a vegan can save the planet even further because by giving up meat and dairy, emissions are reduced by seven times, and if you were really virtuous, and were an organic-only vegan, you'd slash emissions by a factor of 17 times.

Now I am not suggesting that you go ultra-restrictive on your diet to save the planet, because as you know, I believe in healthy eating without giving up any of your favorite comfort foods.  It's important to go green for the environment, but even more important is adopting healthy eating habits to save yourself and be there for all the ones you love, and then you'll be on hand to make the world a better place.

Here's the original Yahoo story:  http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080826/sc_afp/lifestylegermanyclimateagriculture

Let me know what you think, feel free to chime in and leave a comment.

Eating Out Healthy Starbucks Vivanno Nourishing Blends

Update May 2011: Starbucks has stopped calling this drink a Vivanno, and simply refers to it as a smoothie.  Possibly because I was the only one who ever asked for it by that name.  Even the Starbucks workers would say "chocolate smoothie" when taking my order.

Update July 2010:  Still a huge Vivanno fan--in fact I'll sometimes have 2 a day when it's hot outside and I want to cut down on my calorie intake for the day.  Here's another tip on Vivannos--Starbucks makes them with 2% milk.  I now make sure I ask for nonfat milk to make my drink even lighter.  Why not?

Hi All,

So I'm at the New Media Expo in Las Vegas early last Saturday morning, and as much as I was into the material, I am not a morning person--especially a weekend morning person.  Fortunately, the Las Vegas Convention Center did have an on-site Starbucks, so relief was at hand.

I went on line thinking I would have my usual Mocha Light for the caffeine boost without a lot of calories, but my gaze fixed upon a large sign that was promoting something new from Starbucks called Vivanno Nourishing Blends.  Two varieties were offered--chocolate banana (need I say more) and Orange Mango Banana.

What's a Starbucks Vivanno nourishing blend?  In the case of the chocolate banana Vivanno, it's a whole banana, bittersweet cocoa, 2% milk, whey protein and fiber powder with no artificial sweeteners.  The result is a trim 270 calories, one fruit serving, 21 grams of satisfying protein and 5 grams of fat.  So much more nutrition than just coffee.

But how does it taste?  Freaking delicious!  What a joy to behold on a dragging my butt Saturday morning!  I had it with a Peanut Toffee Buzz Clif Bar I brought along at the keynote session, and that held me all the way through mid-afternoon.  The chocolate banana tastes is like having a full fat treat shake, but it's actually good for you comfort food.  Kudos to Starbucks, you should promo the heck out of the Vivanno.  Way to think out of the box!

Have you tried other flavors of Starbucks Vivanno?  You are welcome to leave a comment and let me know what you thought.

Jennifer Love Hewitt Weight Loss What Did You Do?

Hi All,

Darn peer pressure, it even works on celebrities like Jennifer Love Hewitt. Back in January when I first started The Healthy Food Review blog, I wrote a popular post called It's A Sad Day When Celebrities Have To Explain Their Weight Gain To The Media in support of Jennifer Love Hewitt's "fuller figure" admist a media storm of, as unbelievable as it sounds, fat jokes, about Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Now, a new media event as Jennifer Love Hewitt shows off an 18 pound weight loss. That's a ridiculous amount of weight for Jennifer Love Hewitt to lose.  The photos of her online and on the People magazine cover I saw in line at the supermarket show a stick figure. I salute her accomplishment if that's what she wanted, but she was fine the way she was. I also think it sets a dangerous precedent, and sends a dangerous message to women and young women everywhere.

It's about being healthy, being fit and having a positive self-image. Oh and by the way, it's okay to be average size for goodness sakes! It's not about being a size zero so you can be a human mannequin. I am sure though Jennifer Love Hewitt's publicist is thrilled to be able to have a solid opportunity to work the media machine.

What do you think about Jennifer Love Hewitt's new weight loss? Or about celebrities getting way too skinny overall? Post a comment and let me hear your thoughts.

The Bacon Makeover - No Such Thing As Food Sinning

Hi All,

I recently came across an interesting blog post where the person admitted that she has "sinned" because she broke down and had a bunch of bacon panned fried in margarine.  We'll address how we can give the bacon a healthy food makeover in a moment, but I was more concerned about the comment about food sinning.

It's this whole concept of "I ate this so I am being bad today", or I ate next to nothing so I being good today" that worries me.  Eating food is not about being bad or good, and one's self worth should not be tied, however innocently to what they are eating. That's the stuff emotional eating is made of which leads to lots of weight problems and health problems.

There's no such thing as food sinning in my opinion since we are all only human.  Any healthy lifestyle has to include the ability to eat your favorite foods or you won't stick with it. I truly believe that the key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is to makeover all your favorite foods to their healthiest possible versions so you never have to sacrifice anything!

Now back to that bacon makeover.  That margarine frying is a big no-no.  You must use a Canola spray or Olive Oil spray to just lightly coat the pan to keep it from sticking.  So much less fat and calories.

The bacon makeover is then complete by substituting lean turkey bacon, or meatless, soy protein based bacon like Morningstar Farms Breakfast strips.

I love bacon too as one of life's great comfort foods, and there's no way I was going to give it up.  I just had to learn to make bacon healthier.  So can you!

Healthy Food Review Weight Watchers Ice Cream

Hi All,

I've never been on Weight Watchers, but you don't have to be to enjoy their amazing ice cream makeovers.  Weight Watchers has a line of ice cream sundaes under their Smart Ones product line that are decadent stunners.

My favorite (and my husband's) is the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream sundae at 170 calories, 3 grams of fat and no trans fat.  A very welcome new addition to the Weight Watchers ice cream sundae family discovered on my last restocking trip to the supermarket was a very close runner up to Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough--a Peanut Butter Cup sundae with the world's tiniest peanut butter cups sprinkled on top--they are the cutest things!  Both of these flavors are fantastic substitutes for past Ben & Jerry's ice cream favorites in the same flavors at a fraction of the fat and calories.

There's also a Weight Watchers Mocha Fudge sundae version that I hoped would be reminiscent of the Baskin Robbins Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream, but did not measure up to that high standard.  I also wasn't as happy with the Weight Watchers Mint Chocolate Chip sundae which was not minty enough, and the chocolate cookie base was very crumbly.  That's okay, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Peanut Butter Cup are clear winners!  Check out the Weight Watchers ice cream sundaes here: http://www.eatyourbest.com/desserts/index.aspx?sid=63

To get the satisfying Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream flavor, I like the Weight Watchers Mint Chocolate Chip cup at 140 calories, 3.5 grams of fat and no trans fat.  By the way, pass on the cup version of the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough--there's almost no cookie dough in it, and you'll be stuck with a cup of almost all vanilla.  To me if ice cream is not at least somewhat exotic, it's not worth the calories.  Besides for a few calories more, you get the heavenly Smart Ones Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough sundae.  Check out the Weight Watchers ice cream cups here:  http://www.weightwatchers.com/shop/categoryshowcase.aspx?pageid=1056621&navid=moreww

Neither the Weight Watchers ice cream sundaes nor the Weight Watchers ice cream cups are going to be huge portion sizes, but they are surprisingly satisfying--probably because of the cool flavors (pun intended).

With fantastic ice cream makeovers like these, its deliciously possible to achieve healthy eating without giving up this favorite comfort food.

TIP:  These Weight Watchers ice cream concoctions can be quite expensive if you get them from your traditional supermarket, even on sale.  Wal-Mart Supercenter has them at the lowest prices I have seen.  For some reason though, the Wal-Mart Supercenter stocks the Weight Watchers ice cream sundaes with the regular Smart Ones meals in entrees, and the Weight Watchers ice cream cups in the regular ice cream section, so you won't find them both together and might think they don't carry the Weight Watchers ice cream sundaes otherwise.
